The theme of Pompeii and its surroundings has been an ongoing project for us both. As far back as the mid-1990s Cherilyn and I exhibited together at the renowned Gallery Smend in Cologne; the title of this exhibition was ‘Oplontis’.
For a long time my knowledge of the excavations at Pompeii came from books, which often show the same images in those familiar bright colours. It was not until I visited the excavation site myself, that I was introduced to a completely different colour palette. I was surprised to see the more subdued hues, which have become the basis for my new work.
